Automated optical inspection (AOI) is an automated visual inspection of printed circuit board (PCB) (or LCD, transistor) manufacture where a camera autonomously scans the device under test for both catastrophic failure (e.g. missing component) and quality defects (e.g. fillet size or shape or component skew). It is commonly used in the manufacturing process because it is a non-contact test method. It is implemented at many stages through the manufacturing process including bare board inspection, solder paste inspection (SPI), pre-reflow and post-reflow as well as other stages. .(Wikipedia)
AOIs for a PCB board with components may inspect the following features:
Component presence or absence
Excessive Solder Joints
Insufficient Paste around Leads
Insufficient Solder Joints
No Population tests
Severely Damaged Components
AOI can be used in the following locations in the SMT lines: post paste, pre-reflow, post-reflow, or wave areas.
AOI for a bare PCB board inspection may detect these features:
Line width violations.
Missing pad – a feature that should be on the board is missing.
Hole breakage – a drilled hole (via) is outside of its landing pad.
The triggering of a defects report may be either rule based (e.g. no lines on the board should be smaller than 50μ) or CAD based in which the board is locally compared with the intended design.
This inspection is much more reliable and repeatable than manual visual inspection.
In many cases, smaller circuit board designs are driving up the demand for AOI vs in-circuit testing. (Wikipedia)

Zero Defects International Brings in Taiyo PCB Inspection System
Zero Defects International [ZDI] has been allocated by Taiyo Industrial Company, Japan, to manage the North American introduction of it’s computerized printed circuit board final inspection systems. These inspection systems have enjoyed widespread success in The European Union and in China and are presently being brought to the USA and Canada.
Ahead of beginning this assignment, ZDI contacted a variety of PCB manufacturers in an effort to determine if there would be a perceived demand for this sort of equipment. The judgement was that the product is one that will do an important function and, additionally, present you with a very suitable Return on investment.
Latest initial trials in the US have proven that the machine could uncover defects which passed typical visual inspection but should have been flagged as not meeting the end customer’s standard. Diagnosis capabilities contain: exposed copper, solder mask on pads, scratches, foreign material, blocked holes and chipped plating.
Who is Taiyo Industrial Co., Ltd.
Taiyo Industrial Co., Ltd. launched in 1960, is diversified with interconnect and test business interests. Flexible printed circuits are a mainstay as well as a huge selection of PCB test and inspection systems.
